The Social Media Strategies of Alexandria Cortez: What’s Working to Gain Support and Inspire Action?

In this blog post, we’ll explore how Alexandria Cortez uses social media to communicate with constituents and spread awareness about important issues like Medicare For All, education, immigration reform, climate change mitigation efforts, criminal justice reform, the list goes on.

Alexandria Cortez, a Democratic primary winner in New York’s 14th congressional district, has recently made headlines for her social media prowess. The 28-year-old, the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress, won against 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley through an aggressive digital campaign.

New York’s 14th congressional district includes the Bronx and Queens. It is, by all means, a safe Democratic seat, so Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t face any serious threat during her general election campaign. According to The New York Times, Trump only won 11 percent of the vote in this highly Hispanic district in 2016, with fellow democratic socialist Bernie Sanders winning 57 percent of the primary vote.

In fact, there is very little doubt that Ocasio-Cortez will win.

So why all the fuss? It comes down to her success on social media and how it helped propel her to victory in a district that Democrats have owned for decades. In an age when political activism is centered around Facebook feeds, and Twitter hashtags, Ocasio-Cortez’s digital campaign was enough to topple the most powerful Democrat in Queens politics. In doing so, she has proved that building support online can be just as effective as knocking on doors and speaking with voters on their doorsteps.

When looking at Ocasio-Cortez’s social media presence, two things are immediately clear: She is very good at Twitter and knows how to turn a meme into an opportunity. In fact, it was her quick thinking on social media that caught the attention of Bernie Sanders in the first place.

It’s not uncommon for Ocasio-Cortez to post several times a day on Twitter or Instagram. And while many candidates use their social media accounts solely for fundraising purposes, Ocasio-Cortez uses them as another way to reach voters. According to DataSelfie, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has so far posted 488 tweets since joining Twitter in 2011. This averages out to about 2.5 per day — which isn’t anything special compared to some other big names on Twitter like Donald Trump, who has about 50 tweets per day.

The beauty of Ocasio-Cortez’s digital campaign is that she doesn’t just tweet a lot — she uses the platform to interact with her constituents directly. For example, when thousands across America marched for stricter gun laws in March following the Parkland school shooting, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was there. In fact, despite having a hectic schedule (see below), Rep. Ocasio-Cortez took time on a Saturday morning to march with protesters and even confronted Nancy Pelosi on camera.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez also found ways to use social media as platforms for real conversations. A few weeks ago, she tweeted a photo of herself and her campaign team eating tacos for dinner. The idea behind this tweet is that the congresswoman wants to be more accessible than other politicians who eat in front of paid audiences or even serve their own version of what “real people” eat. And what started as an attempt at making herself seem relatable soon turned into an opportunity for real interaction with constituents.

The photo received an overwhelming number of responses from Ocasio-Cortez’s followers, many of which asked where they could go to buy tacos like these. This prompted Rep. Ocasio-Cortez to respond and suggest that her followers try Taqueria Corona, located two blocks away from her campaign office. As a result, Ocasio-Cortez got to interact with several of her constituents and helped promote her local businesses, and did so in a natural rather than forced way.

But it’s more than just content or conversation where Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has shined on social media in her digital campaign. She is also very good at turning memes and viral moments into real opportunities for growth. For example, after the first round of Democratic debates, BET made a meme out of Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s reaction to fellow candidate Sen. Kamala Harris’ criticism during the debate (as seen below).

The image went instantly viral among progressives online and led to many conversations about Gabbard and her stances on foreign policy. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign team saw an opportunity here — so they went ahead and posted a photo of their own showcasing the congresswoman in front of the debate stage.

The message was clear: “I wasn’t invited, but I could’ve taken them all.”

This is a perfect example of how Rep. Ocasio-Cortez didn’t just respond to events that were happening or use memes for self-interested purposes — she used them as opportunities to continue to grow her brand and engage with voters online. This is where storytelling comes into play, especially when combined with other aspects of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s digital strategy.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez does a great job of using social media to tell her story, such that people feel like they know her as an individual rather than just as a congresswoman. There are plenty of examples of this, but one I found particularly interesting is Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitter bio :

“Herein lies my resume,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez writes at the bottom of her profile page — which is filled with different tweet threads highlighting legislation she introduced or various achievements in academia. “It’s pretty good, right? Read it and weep. Watch me launch my presidential campaign … whenever that happens.”

The effect of this is that when you visit her Twitter page, you see a congresswoman who’s very much aware of the image she’s presenting to the public. And while Rep. Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t hype herself up too much on social media, especially in comparison to other politicians like Ted Cruz or Donald Trump, she still knows how to use self-deprecating humor — which makes her seem just as “real” as anyone else.

This humanizing quality has helped drive Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s success in digital campaigning: She uses social platforms to tell stories about what she believes in and why — and these are often stories that people can relate to from their own lives.

Koln University found that emotion drives social sharing, and upbeat emotional messages are shared more than negative, depressing ones. This is why so many ” clickbait ” articles with horrid titles do well on Facebook — people enjoy seeing positive content, even if they’re probably not going to read the whole thing. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez recognizes this, and her tweets focus almost exclusively on positivity and hopes for a better future.

If something is troubling or disappointing in the world she wants to talk about (like Trump’s executive order regarding Guantanamo Bay detainees ), she uses this opportunity as an opportunity to emphasize how Democrats will fight back against these problems rather than be defined by them. And then it helps that she’s a young female minority-elector congresswoman who has been leading the charge against Trump — so she’s naturally going to be able to reach a lot of people.

It was this strategy that led directly to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez ‘s primary victory. Whereas her opponent, Joseph Crowley, had over 10 times the money in his campaign war chest, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez used social media to connect with voters and show them what kind of leader she would be. This led to $87,000 in grassroots donations being sent her way via ActBlue – which came from every state in the United States. It’s no wonder why Crowley lost; not only did he fail to connect with voters, but he also didn’t use social media effectively either.

There were plenty of examples when this strategy paid off big in the Democratic primary — like the time Rep. Ocasio-Cortez used Twitter to call out Crowley for being a ” Wall Street Democrat .” But what made it so effective was that she wasn’t just blasting him as a typical politician; instead, she asked her followers to think about where their money went when they sent it to Crowley’s campaign. Did those who donated to him want their money going towards people buying clothes and fancy dinners? Or would they prefer it to go towards funding programs that will help American families? It connected directly with people’s lives and showed why they should be angry with Crowley’s campaign instead of the typical “corrupt politicians” talking point.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez ‘s Twitter bio says she wants to launch a presidential campaign, but that hasn’t happened yet. And although her name has come up in discussions about who will run against Trump in 2020, it’s not certain whether that’s something she actually wants to do or if people are throwing her name out there because it sounds good. But no matter what happens, we’ll likely see Rep. Ocasio-Cortez continue to use social media as an effective tool for promoting issues she cares about and explaining why they’re so important to the public — because this is how she sees herself being most successful at helping the country.

She said it should be completely illegal for a person to become a lobbyist when he had already served in Congress. Sen. Cruz also joined AOC  for legislation, placing a Lifetime ban on former congress members from becoming lobbyists.

AOC has also been using Twitter to express her opinions regarding constitutional matters.

In 2020 she proposed an amendment to prohibit American armed forces from using Twitch as a recruitment tool.

However, her proposal was rejected as she also faced opposition from the majority of her fellow Democrats. Following the rejection of the Amendment, AOC took to Twitter to squeeze out her exasperations.

“Imagine, you are trying to explain to your colleagues who are members of Congress what Twitch is,” she tweeted.

These tweets are perfect examples of AOC authenticity as well as fluency. She reacts to different news and creates her own engaging stories, making her an unofficial queen of Twitter.
